25th September in Irish Military History 1857 At the relief of Lucknow, during the Indian Mutiny two men with Irish connections earned the Victoria Cross. Assistant Surgeon Valentine McMaster brought in and attended to the wounded under enemy fire. He died in Belfast in 1872. Captain William Olpherts from Co. Armagh of the Bengal Artillery, charged on horseback with the 90th Regiment when they captured two guns in the face of very heavy fire . He later returned, again under heavy fire with horses to tow away the captured guns. 1914Killed in action on the Western Front serving in 2nd Bn Royal Irish Regt. 10007 Pte Thomas Colbert. Aglish, Co. Waterford. 6172 Pte Michael Quinn. Waterford. 1915The Battle of Loos began in France and would last until Oct 19th. It was a big offensive by comparison with previous efforts but small in comparison with the Somme and Paschendaele. A famous Irish participant was Patrick McGill who served with the London Irish. He wrote a novel called “The Big Push”, part of it, as he waited to advance from his trench against the Germans. On the day Pte Henry Kenny, 1st Bn The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, earned a VC when he went out on six occasions under very heavy fire to rescue wounded men. He was wounded himself bringing in the last wounded soldier. Henry was born in London to Limerick parents. 191519555 Pte Patrick Hayes, 2nd Bn South Wales Borderers. He died in Gallipoli. From Waterford. 943 Pte John Markley, from Dungarvan. Co. Waterford. He was killed in action on The Western Front serving in 10th Bn Highland Light Infantry. 5197 L/Cpl James Parker,2nd Bn Royal Irish Rifles He was killed in action on the Western Front. He was a native of Templemichael, Co. Waterford. The 2nd Bn Royal Irish Rifles also lost a pair of brothers killed on this day. 2/Lt Kenneth Ross, age 25, and 2/Lt Melbourne Ross, age 30. They were from Cultra, Co. Down, the sons of George and Henrietta Ross. Both of them are commemorated on the Menin Gate. 1916747 L/Sgt Maurice Boland, 2nd Bn Royal Munster Fusiliers. He died on the Western Front. From Cappoquin, Co Waterford. 25280 2nd Cpl Thomas McCarthy MM, Royal Engineers. Killed in action on the Western Front. He is buried in the Guards Cemetery, Lesbouefs, Somme, Framce. He was from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. 1917Thomas Ashe died on hunger strike in the Mater Hospital in Dublin. 1982Comdt Michael Lynch was awarded a Military Medal for Gallantry for loyalty, initiative and courage during a mission behind Syrian lines in the mountains east of Beirut. Comdt Michael Nestor. Killed whilst serving with UNTSO in Lebanon. 1983 19 IRA prisoners escaped from the Maze prison.

He was a Group Captain in the RAF during WW2 and fought in the Battle of Britain. 1915The Guards Division including the Irish Guards, entered Loos and captured Hill 70. 12459 Pte Albert Douch from Waterford, 7th Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died of wounds in France. 1917Major Sidney Toppin, born Clonmel. Royal Artillery. KIA at Ypres. He is buried in Ljissenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Sidney Toppin was born in Clonmel, the son of James Toppin who must have been serving in the Artillery Barracks there at the time. 235684 Pte James Humphries, born Waterford. 2nd Bn, Royal Scots. Died of wounds in Belgium. 191811431 Pte Michael Gough, 1st Bn Irish Guards from Carrigerea, Co. Waterford.. KIA France. 6739 Pte David Prendergast from Dungarvan., 2nd Bn Royal Irish Regt. KIA France. 1941IRA man, George Plant from Fethard, Co. Tipperary, murdered Michael Devereaux from Co. Wexford, near Grangemockler, Co. Tipperary. Devereaux was suspected of being an informer. Plant was eventually convicted and executed for the crime.

28th September in Irish Military History 1690John Churchill, the future Duke of Malborough, took Cork for King William. 1857At Bolandshahr, during the Indian Mutiny, the following Irishmen won the Victoria Cross Sgt Bernard Diamond and Gnr Richard Fitzgerald were both awarded a VC when they continued to work their gun under heavy fire and when the rest of the crew had been killed or wounded. Both men were in the Bengal Artillery. In the 9th Lancers at the same time and place Pte Patrick Donoghue, earned a VC when he rescued a wounded officer from a large contingent of enemy cavalry. Pte Donoghue was from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. 1920The IRA captured the military barracks in Mallow, Co. Cork. 1998 200 years of military history come to an end in Fermoy and Ballincollig as the barracks are closed. 1915S4871 Pte Timothy Barron, 9th Bn The Black Watch. Died of Wounds on the Western Front. He was from Tallow, Co.Waterford. 19172709 L/Cpl James Quann, 16th Bn Manchester Regt. Killed in action on the Western Front. He was from Waterford. 1963Comdt Thomas McMahon died in the Congo.

29th September in Irish Military History 1918 Francis Langhorne age 14 Lt Francis Langhorne. 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. KIA France. He is buried in Bourlon Wood Cemetery. His name appears on the WW1 Memorial Plaque in Old St. Mary's in Clonmel. Presumably his father must have served in the barracks at some stage. Francis Langhorne was born in India on 30th November 1892, the son of Lt Harold Langhorne and his wife, Amy. Francis emigrated to Canada before WW1 and joined the army on 18th September 1914. Leitrim. 70978 Con Edward Noonan. Born Co. Galway 23/4/1894. 1992Cpl Peter Ward, 71st Irishbatt, was killed by the Hizballah near Al Jurn, Lebanon. He was the car commander of a Sisu APC, going to assist the Irish Checkpoint in Al Jurn which was under attack from Hizballah. The same group opened fire on the APC and Cpl Ward was shot dead.

...His name appears on the WW1 Memorial Plaque in Old St. Mary's in Clonmel. Presumably his father must have served in the barracks at some stage. Or perhaps not. A little time spent trawling the net reveals that Francis Langhorne's Uncle, William Langhorne, was County Inspector of the RIC in South Tipperary from 1910 to 1920. In the 1911 Census he is registered as living at Croan Lower, Clonmel.

3rd October in Irish Military History 1691The Treaty of Limerick was signed effectively bringing to an end the Williamite War in Ireland. 1871Gen. John O'Neill and a force of Fenians invaded Canada. 1960CS Felix Grant, from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary died in the Congo. He died of natural causes and has the distinction of being the first Irish soldier to die on UN service. 1975Dr Tiede Herrema, chief executive of the Ferenka factory in Limerick, was kidnapped by the IRA. After a two week search he was found at a house in Monasterevan, Co. Kildare. A further two week siege ensued before he was released on Nov 7th. The kidnappers, Eddie Gallagher and Marion Coyle were sentenced to 20 and 15 years respectively in 1976. 1993Airman Steven O'Connor, 73rd Irishbatt, died in Lebanon.

4th October in Irish Military History 1693The recently-formed Irish Brigade of France fought in the battle of Marsaglia. 1916On the Somme Lt Henry Kelly, born in Manchester to Irish parents, won a Victoria Cross when he twice rallied his company under heavy fire and eventually led the last three men into the German trench, remaining there bombing, until two of the men became casualties and enemy reinforcements arrived. He then rescued his wounded Company Sergeant-Major and other wounded. In 1918 Capt Kelly was serving in Italy where he won a Military Cross and Bar. 6760 Pte Patrick O'Connor from Tramore, 2nd Bn Royal Munster Fusiliers. Died of wounds on the Western Front. 1917At Zonnebeke, Belgium, Captain Clement Robertson from Delgany, Co. Wicklow, led his tanks into an attack under heavy fire. Capt Robertson led them on foot. He and his batman had spent the previous three days reconnoitring and taping the attack routes. He was killed after the objective had been reached, but his skilful leadership ensured the success of the mission. 58297 Bombardier James Cronin from Tallow, Royal Field Artillery. 6th October in Irish Military History 1175 The Treaty of Windsor was signed in which Rory O'Connor, High King of Ireland, recognized Henry II of England as his overlord. 1857L/Cpl John Sinnott, from Wexford, earned a VC in the Indian Mutiny with the 84th Foot when he was wounded twice while helping recover the body of a mortally wounded Captain. 1879Maj George White, from Antrim, a company commander in the Gordon Highlanders, earned a VC when attacking a superior number of enemy. In the face of withering fire his company hesitated but Maj White charged alone and killed the leader of the Afghans, inspiring his own troops to continue the assault. George made it to General and commanded the garrison of Ladysmith against the Boers. 1902 Lt Col Alexander Cobbe, born in India of Irish parents, earned a VC by manning a Maxim Gun alone against attacking Somalis and rescuing a wounded Private. He was attached to the King’s African Rifles at the time. 191510001 Sgt James Conway, 1st Bn Royal Irish Regt. Died of wounds at home. He was from Waterford. 19169670 Pte Matthew Kiely, 2nd Bn Royal Irish Regt. Killed in action on the Western Front. He was from Clonmel and is buried in Berks Cemetery Extension, Ploegsteert, Belgium. 1951PFC Patrick White from Louth. 25th Inf Div US Army. PFC Thomas Quinn, Roscommon. 1st Cav Div, US Army. Both died in Korea 1981 Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated by Islamic fundamentalists during a military parade in Cairo. Irish Defence Minister Jim Tully was on the reviewing stand and was slightly injured.

8th October in Irish Military History 1858In Oudh, during the Indian Mutiny, Pte Charles Anderson of the 2nd Dragoon Guards and another man rescued their Colonel from attack by a large group of rebels. Both men were awarded a VC. Anderson was a Liverpudlian of Irish descent. 1999A statue dedicated to James Magennis, winner of the Victoria Cross in 1945, was unveiled outside Belfast City Hall. 191815188 Pte James Fogarty from Clonmel, 5th Bn Connaught Rangers. KIA France. 240282 Pte William Harvey from Tipperary, 2/5th Bn Royal Lancaster Regt. KIA France.

Both battaliuons of the Irish Guards fought in this phase as part of the Guards Division. In the 29th Division, the 1st Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers and 1st Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers also participated. 11620 Pte William Quigley from Killenaule, Co. Tipperary. 2nd Bn Irish Guards. KIA Ypres. 1984Cpl George Murray, 57th Irishbatt, died in Lebanon.
