Hello There, :)
I'm new to the forum.
Please if anyone can help me further with information about the above regiment.
I googled trying to find a timeframe and any information at all on this above regiment, but without success, and wondering if this regiment may of had a different name.
I'm researching my Flanagan ancestry, and found that my 3xgrandfather William Flanagan was a sergeant with the above regiment around 1859ish.
On my 2xgrandfather John Michael Flanagans birth certificate born 1859 Hurst Hordle, Hordle, Hampshire, England, stated father William Flanagan occ: Colour Sergeant with Tipperary Artillery.
I have found a bit of information on the regiment probably stationed at Hurst Castle.
From later news report it appears that the Tipperary Artillery Militia moved on from the Gosport Hants area to Sheerness Kent around March 1860, and returned to Ireland in March 1861(thus missing the 1861 Census for England).
Another news item: the Sheffield Independent and also the Preston Chronicle about my 3xgrandfather on 13th September 1862 report of a violent attack on Sergeant Flanagan of the staff of the South Tipperary Artillery Regiment of Militia, he was hit hard in the face with a stone by a man who stole his watch, outside the ordnance barrack gate in barrack street Clonmel, his injuries were life threatening, but he survived as i found William Flanagan (Militia Sergeant) living at 71 Manor Street on the Waterford Street Directory 1877.
Any reply will be very much appreciated!
Kind Regards Gary ;)

Hi Gary.
I think I've come across your posts on the Tipperary Family History Forum.
Unfortunately you're stuck with a rather obscure Army unit. The militia was first formed in 1793 and was like the Territorial Army during the 19th century. In 1881 the militia regiments became the Reserve battalions of the local regiment. Having said that two militia units in Ireland were artillery, one being the South Tipperary Artillery militia. From memory there are, I think, headstones of Tipperary artillery militiamen in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Clonmel dating from the early 1900s.
There are still records in Kew relating t the militia regiments but the problem with your ancestors is how far back in time they served. Naturally records get scarcer the farther back you go and the situation is not helped by the Germans lobbing a bomb on the National Archives once upon a time. Many Irish people, myself included, haven't even found WW1 records for our relatives because the records have been burnt.
The unit occasionally gets a mention in the local papers. I came across one article from the 1870s (I think) when they were training in Clonmel. If you can get to the library in Thurles they hold copies of the local papers back to the late 18th century. I'm not sure if they area available online though.

Hi groundhog,
Thanks so much for you sending the two court cases about my Sergeant Flanagan.
One time someone did send to me about the two cases, but only a few paragraphs on each case, and thanks to you, i've greatly received the whole case.
I've been trying to find the marriage of my 3xgrandparents, but no success yet, but recently i found three baptisms, two 2xgreat uncles and 2xgreat aunt.
I'm hoping some useful information might turn up on my William, as being a sergeant, so i'm wondering if you might think the Waterford or Tipperary archives could have anything on my William.
This is a tree of my ancestry:
William Flanagan occ: Sergeant of South Tipperary Artillery Militia MARRIAGE: ? Mary London or Loudon " " " " Thomas Flanagan bap. 14-04-1849 Emly, Co.Tipperary.
Catherine Flanagan bap. 16-07-1854 Emly, Co.Tipperary.
Michael Flanagan bap. 22-11-1854 Emly, Co.Tipperary.
John Michael Flanagan b. 25-08-1859 Hurst Hordle, Hordle, Hampshire, England. bap. 02-12-1860 Holy Trinity, Sheerness, Kent, England. d. ? MARRIAGE: 22-12-1883 Cathedral Parish, Holy Trinity, Waterford, Ireland. Gertrude Ann Tiffin bap. 22-11-1863 St.Johns, Waterford, Ireland. " " " " Jessie Lowry Vigurs Flanagan b. 01-09-1884 No.3 Wolff Street, Belfast, Ireland.
William Frederick Flanagan b. 16-05-1886 Bank Lane, Waterford, Ireland. (my grandfather he had 11 children)
George Barrett Flanagan b.29-04-1893 Lying in Hospital, Belfast, Ireland
Thanks Again Gary

No problem Gary. It's possible that there was a later trial of the actual culprit. I'll keep an eye out for it.
Apart from life events it's unlikely there would be much in the archives in Waterford or Tipperary. Also you grandfathers seemed to move around a lot with the army so there could be records anywhere for them. You're lucky to have had one of them appear in the newspapers.
Any idea when William died? It would give an idea when he was born and married. With a wife with an unusual surname it might make it easier to track a marriage on Irish Family History Foundation.

Hi groundhog,
Thanks for keeping an eye out for me on the rest of the court hearing.
The site you've mentioned Irish Family History Foundation, is the one i found three baptisms of my ancestors, in Emly, Co Tipperary, and i have a strange feeling the marriage of my 3xgrandparents William Flanagan and Mary London or Loudon took place in Waterford, but at the moment, i see the site haven't allowed for the search feature in Waterford yet, and i hope its allowed soon.
Speak soon Gary

Hi groundhog,
Since i spoke last, i hit the jackpot, and found my 3xgrandparents William Flanagan and Mary London buried in St.Patricks cemetery in Clonmel, and two of there children also, as you would say ''my 2xgreat aunt and uncle''. I got to thank you for that, for me to lookup on the burials, and i found my grandparents there, but i wasn't 100% at the time, till i got a bit more info from a cousin i found, and it all added up with both of our info we shared, we found the connection, and the cousin sent me photos of the graves, that i greatly received.
So When my William left the Tipperary Militia, he moved to 51 Cashel Street, Clonmel, and that was his residence till he died in 1899.
I found out recently my 3xgrandmother Mary London was born in Elmy,Co Tipperary, by her Interment Record, and the first three children born there also, and now just before christmas, i sent for a lookup of the marriage, and i hope its there, then the £'s will be worth spent.
Got to go now groundhog, and thanks for everything.
Kind Regards Gary
