Having been asked twice in the last month for my opinion on Irish uniforms I've decided it would be a good idea to start this thread. The intention is to post pics of Civil War uniforms accompanied by a description or pointing out a variation.
To start I've posted a great photo from the National Library of Capt Paul Hetherington, believed to have been taken in Waterford Union and dated 7th November 1922.

His soft cap has no wire stiffener, the diamond-shaped patch behind the cap badge was used to indicate rank according to colour. Rank markings were also on the cuffs in the form of coloured bands.
Tunic has a high collar and fastened with 5 large brass buttons which should be about 25mm in diameter. Epaulettes and pockets fastened with smaller buttons (18mm) of the same style. The breast pockets have scalloped flaps and a wide bellows pleat sewn into them.
The lower pockets are sewn externally with a deep pocket flap and no bellows pleat. The Sam Browne Belt is supported by two shoulder straps.
Trousers are riding breeches and he appears to be wearing high leather lace-up boots
Hetherington is in the centre of this group photo, taken the same day. His cuff bands are visible.
The obvious differences here are the man in front wearing a V-Neck tunic with shirt and tie. The front row features the Sam Browne belt with two shoulder straps, while in the rear are some with one diagonal strap. One man is wearing 1908 pattern webbing. Some of the uniforms appear to be darker than Hetherington's.
