On Tuesday evening last I was at a talk by Dave Foley on the Missing Irish, those Irishmen and women of World War 1 who have no known grave and are commemorated on various memorials. The following day I had a look at a list of Clonmel War Dead I compiled some years ago, added a few from CWGC and came up with 174 Clonmel dead of WW1 of whom 74 (42%) are commemorated on various memorials to the missing distributed as follows;
The Thiepval Memorial is the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme from the time the British took the sector over from the French in late 1915 TO 20TH March 1918. It commemorates 72,201 officers and men of UK and South African forces who died in the Somme sector. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. The memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and was built between 1928 and 1932. It was unveiled by the Prince of Wales on 1st August 1932. The dead of other Commonwealth countries, who died on the Somme and have no known graves, are commemorated on national memorials elsewhere.
