In Ulster John Kelly, 'Kelly the boy from Killane' was executed. 1911King George V was crowned King of Great Britain and Ireland at Westminster Abbey. 192068879 Constable Eugene Path RIC was shot and wounded in Dublin. He was born in Co. Tipperary in 1897. 1922Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, the Chief of the Imperial General Staff was assassinated by two IRA men as he entered his home in London. He was born in 1864 in Currygrane, County Longford. 1940France signed an armistice with Germany eight days after the fall of Paris. 1985The Air India disaster happened off the south east coast of Ireland.

23rd June in Irish Military History 1757British rule in India, as opposed to occupying trading posts, began after the Battle of Plassey was fought on this day. The forces of the East India Company under Robert Clive defeated the army of the Nawab of Bengal. The Nawab's successor, one Mir Jafar, was bought off as were many of the Nawab's soldiers. 1798 The United Irishmen occupied Goresbridge, Co. Kilkenny. Meanwhile the northern column moved into Wicklow Mountains. 1855Pte John McCorrie of the 57th Foot, fighting at Sebastopol in the Crimean War threw a burning shell out of his trench and was awarded a VC. 1857Colour-Sergeant Steven Garvin from Cashel, Co. Tipperary, led a small party of men under heavy fire to the 'Sammy House' at Delhi, India to capture it from a number of mutineers who were firing on a battery of heavy guns. He was serving in the 60th Rifles. Also awarded a VC at Delhi on this day was Pte John McGovern of the 1st Bengal Fusiliers, for rescuing a comrade under fire. 1941Third Officer Alexander Jack diedin the Merchant Navy. 19444922206 Pte William Martley, 5th Bn, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders was killed in France. He was the son of Patrick and Margaret Martley, and the husband of Mary Martley, Clonmel. He died age 31 and is buried in Hermanville War Cemetery.

Kerry. 19161377 Sgt Andrew Doyle, 7th Bn Leinster Regt. Died on the Western Front. 1944Sailor Michael Lynch from Youghal, Co. Cork, died on the S.S. British Renown age 17 and was buried in Parkhurst Military Cemetery, Isle of Wight.

Philip Roche, Matthew Keogh and other insurgents were hanged in Wexford town. 1870Erskine Childers was born in London. 1876The Battle of the Little Bighorn was fought in Montana between Gen George Custer’s 7th Cavalry and Crazy Horse’s Sioux and their Cheyenne allies. 260 US soldiers died including Capt Myles Keogh from Co. Carlow. 1900Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, was born. He fought in World War II and was killed by an IRA bomb on his boat in Co. Sligo in 1979. 191510118 Pte James O'Brien. 1st Bn Royal Irish Regt. Killed in action on the Western Front. From Waterford City. 19162266 Pte Michael McCarthy, 2nd Bn Leinster Regt. Died on the Western Front. Son of Daniel and Catherine McCarthy, Bansha Rd., Tipperary. 19172/Lt John Dunville from Ireland, serving in the 1st Royal Dragoons won a VC at Epehy in France by placing himself between enemy fire and an NCO who was attempting to demolish the German wire during a raid. Though wounded Lt Dunville continued to command the raid. He later died of wounds. 192061494 Constable Michael Horan RIC was killed in Tipperary. He was born in Co.Roscommon 4/2/1882. 1922Volunteer Thomas Lennon, IRA, from Gortnahoe, Co. Tipperary was accidentally shot and killed. 1950North Korea invaded South Korea. The Korean War pitted UN forces which were led by Gen McArthur against North Korea and China. The 3 year war resulted in 2.5 million deaths. Officially the two sides are still at war.

Killed in action on the Western Front. Son of Michael and Catherine Prince, 1 Robinson Lane, Waterford City. 1917The first American troops arrived in France under the command of General John Pershing. My great Uncle Michael Flynn, from Clonmel, was a gunner in one of his artillery regiments.

28th June in Irish Military History 1798John Colclough was tried and executed in Wexford town along with Cornelius Grogan and Bagenal Harvey. 1914Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife, Sofia, were assassinated in Sarajevo, by Gavrilo Princip. The Royal couple had survived an earlier bomb attack by the Serbian Black Hand gang. Returning to their hotel through the city, their driver took a wrong turn and delivered them, purely accidentally, into the path of the assassin. This wrong turn, 90 years ago today, changed the course of world history. 191576727 Gunner James Lonergan, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds in Egypt. From Castle, Co. He was born 22/4/1900 in Cork. 1922 The Four Courts were abandoned by Anti-Treaty forces after a two-day bombardment 1941Stephen Hayes, IRA chief of staff, was kidnapped; He later claimed to have been 'court martialled' and tortured by the IRA. Seán McCaughey was later convicted of his kidnapping. 1960The Belgian Congo became an independent state. Patrice Lumumba became the prime minister. 1996The IRA fired mortar bombs at a British army base in the German town of Osnabruck.

1st July in Irish Military History 1690The Battle of the Boyne was fought between the forces of James II, consisting of Irish, French, Germans and Walloon troops and those of William of Orange, consisting of Irish, English, Dutch, German and Danish troops. Ironically, Pope Alexander VIII welcomed the victory of the Protestant William of Orange, it being seen as a defeat for their common enemy, Louis XIV of France. 1857Colonel James Travers of the 2nd Bengal Native Infantry charged a battery of rebel guns at Delhi, during the Indian Mutiny, with only five men to support him, and drove the gunners off. For this action he was awarded a VC. 1863 The Battle of Gettysburg began. In the first day's fighting, Federal forces retreated through the town and dug in at Cemetery Ridge and Cemetery Hill. 1867Thomas Francis Meagher, 1848 rebel leader and American Civil War General, died in the US. 1915Capt Gerald O’Sullivan, 1st Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers led an attack at Gallipoli to recapture a trench during which, in order to use his grenades effectively, he exposed himself to enemy fire and was wounded. He was KIA at Suvla on August 21st 1915. Sgt James Somers from Belturbet, Co. Cavan, serving in the same battalion bombed the Turks out of a captured sap and held them at bay until a barricade could be erected. He too earned his VC and survived to die at home in Modreeny, Co. Tipperary in 1918. 1916In France the Somme offensive began. 20,000 soldiers died on the bloodiest day in British history. The 36th (Ulster) Division suffered 6000 casualties attacking and holding the Hohenzollern Redoubt near Thiepval Wood. The Battle of the Somme would last until 20th November, killing 1 million Allied and German soldiers. 12000 Irishmen among them. James, John, and Samuel Donaldson, were three brothers killed whilst serving with B Company, the 13th Bn, Royal Irish Rifles. They were from Comber, County Down. In the 12th Bn Royal Irish Rifles, died James,and John McGowan from Ballymena, Co. Antrim. Of ten Victoria Crosses earned by British soldiers on the first day of the Somme, four were awarded to soldiers of the 36th Ulster Division. Three of them were posthumous. Irish VC winners on the first day of the Somme.Pte William McFadzean, 14th Bn Royal Irish Rifles. He threw himself on top of a grenade in a crowded forward trench as his battalion waited to go over the top. A box of grenades had spilled and some of the pins had fallen out. Capt Eric Bell, 9th Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers attacked the German trenches by throwing mortar bombs into them, when under heavy fire and despite the fact that other troops were pinned down. He was killed while trying to reorganise a group of leaderless soldiers. Lt Geoffrey Cather, 9th Bn Royal Irish Fusiliers, won his VC for rescuing wounded men on the 1st and 2nd of July. He was killed bringing water to a wounded man on the morning of the 2nd. Rifleman Robert Quigg, 12th Bn Royal Irish Rifles won a VC for going out into No Mans Land seven times to search for his platoon commander, who had been wounded. Each time he brought back a wounded man. He worked under enemy fire for seven hours. Died 1st July 1916

2nd July in Irish Military History 1798The United Irishmen defeated a small force of Yeomanry at Ballraheen Hill 1915 1/9804 Pte Thomas Davis. 1st Bn Royal Munster Fusiliers. Executed by firing squad, aged 21. He was the son of Mrs. Margaret Davis, of Turnpike Road, Ennis, Co. Clare. 1916 7525 Pte Patrick McElligott 2nd Bn Royal Irish Regt. From Co. Tipperary. 1920At Newtown Cross, near Ballinure, Co. Tipperary, the IRA ambushed an RIC patrol, killing a Sgt Tobin and wounding Constable Brady. 1940 75 miles west of Donegal, the SS Arandora Star, en route from Liverpool to Newfoundland, was sunk by U-47. She was transporting internees and POWs. 805 people died.

From Waterford 1920Richard Lumley, a civilian, was shot dead by the security forces in Holycross, Co. Tipperary. In Upperchurch another civilian, Michael Small was also shot dead by the security forces. 1942104360 Pilot Officer Charles Henning from Mitchelstown, Co. Cork was killed in action with 226 Sqdn, RAF. 226 Sqdn was a bomber squadron flying Douglas Bostons. On July 4th 1942 the squadron launched raids by 12 aircraft on 4 Dutch airfields: De Kooy, Bergen, Haamstede and Valkenburg. Six of the planes were crewed by members of the American Eighth Air Force under instruction. Three Bostons were shot down. The RAF history says all of the aircraft lost were crewed by Americans but at least one RAF man was lost and is commemorated on the Runnymede memorial.

Encountering a government force led by General Duff, they turned south to Ballygullen, where they stood and fought. The battle was indecisive and, threatened by three other Government columns converging on them, the rebels split their forces into two columns, one moving west to Carnew and Glenmalure, the other column marching into the Wicklow Mountains 1916In France, the British began the second phase of the Battle of the Somme with an attack on Mametz Wood. 2nd Bn Royal Irish Regt took part in the assault.
