7th July in Irish Military History 1857At Lucknow, during the Indian Mutiny, Lieutenant Samuel Lawrence of the 32nd Foot. from Ireland was the first person to mount a ladder to examine a house held by the enemy, in order to discover whether or not a mine was being driven from it. His pistol was knocked from his hand by one of the enemy while he was accomplishing this task. Also, on 26 September the Lieutenant charged, with two of his men, in advance of his company, and captured a 9-pounder gun. Sam received a VC in due course. His Scottish cousin, Thomas Cadell, won a VC the previous June 12th at Delhi. Lt Cadell was in the 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers which later became the Royal Munster Fusiliers. 1916 14604 L/Cpl Edward Whittle from Waterford City. He was Killed in action on the Western Front with 9th Bn The Welsh Regt. 19173569 Pte Patrick Casserty, 6th Bn Royal Irish Regt. Died on the Western Front. From Cashel. 1922 Cathal Brugha died from injuries received when shot by Free State forces in O'Connell Street, Dublin.

He was the Free State Minister for Justice. 1940 The Battle of Britain began as the Luftwaffe began attacking southern England by air. 1953 Died in Korea. Pte Patrick Lavin, 7th Inf Div, US Army. He was from Co. Leitrim. 1979 Pte Philip Grogan. Died in Lebanon serving with UNIFIL.

11th July in Irish Military History 1708 The Battle of Oudenarde was fought in the Spanish Netherlands (modern day Belgium) during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy defeated the French. Irish troops fought on both sides. 12th July in Irish Military History Happy Twelfth to all. 1691 At the Battle of Aughrim, King William’s army defeated the Jacobites. The Jacobite Commander, General St Ruth, was killed by a cannonball. Aughrim was the bloodiest battle fought in Ireland to date. 1857During the period 12 July to 25 September 1857 in Lucknow, India, Lance-Corporal Abraham Boulger from Kilcullen, Co Kildare, distinguished himself in all 12 actions fought by his regiment, the 84th Foot. He was one of the party which stormed the bridge over the canal on the relief of the Residency and shot a gunner who was in the act of firing a 68-pounder in the face of the British troops. He was also the first man to enter a masked battery. In the subsequent defence of the Residency he was severely wounded. For his actions he was awarded a VC. L/Cpl Boulger worked his way up to the rank of Lt-Col and died in Co. Westmeath, where he is buried in Ballymore Churchyard, in 1900. Another Irish member of the 84th Foot was Pte Patrick Mylott from Claremorris, Co. Mayo. For his bravery over the same period he was elected by his comrades to receive a VC. Pat finished his career as a Sgt and died in Liverpool in 1878. 1916 W/1374 Gnr John Francis O'Mara, Royal Field Artillery. Died on the Western Front. From Cashel, Co. Tipperary. 192071609 Sgt John Stokes, RIC. KIA at Rearcross, Co. Tipperary. He was born in Newry 15/10/1898. 1992 Albert Pierrepont, the last British hangman died. He also did a few nixers for the Irish Free State during WW2. In all, he caused 433 men and 17 women to dance the Newgate Hornpipe.

He was a crew member of HMS "Vivid II". 1916 4412 Pte Patrick Dower 2nd Bn Royal Munster Fusiliers Died of wounds on the Western Front. From Waterford. 191844794 Pte Timothy Cullagh, 19th Bn, Durham Light Infantry. Killed in action on the Western Front. Born Cashel, Co. Tipperary. 1927Constance Markievicz died. 1940The Irish merchant ship City of Limerick was sunk by aircraft off Cape Ushant. Two sailors died. 1942Wing Commander Brendan Finucane, RAF, from Dublin, from was shot down and killed off the French coast. "Paddy" Finucane was the RAF's youngest ever Wing Commander at 21 years of age. He had 32 kills to his credit. 1967PFC John Collopy from Limerick was killed in action in Vietnam serving with the 4th Inf Div, US Army.

He was killed in battle with the Burke clan shortly after. 1874 Cathal Brugha was born in Dublin. 1916 2nd Bn Royal Munster Fusiliers, as part of the 1st Division, captured a German Trench called Munster Alley and part of the original German support trench, south of Pozieres on the Somme. 5652 Gunner Robert Hannigan. Royal Field Artillery. Died in Mesopotamia. He was from Waterford. 7893 Pte Patrick O'Donnell from Waterford. Royal Army Service Corps. Died of wounds on the Western Front.

20th July in Irish Military History 1616Red Hugh O'Neill died in Rome. 1798The United Irish rebels surrendered at Timahoe. 1877Tom Crean, Polar Explorer and Petty Officer in the Royal Navy, was born in Annascaul, Co. Kerry. 1914Brigadier Hubert Gough led the Curragh Mutiny. Mutiny was a bit of a misnomer. In fact the mutiny consisted of almost the entire body of officers of the 5th Cavalry Brigade, stationed in the Curragh, accepting the government’s offer of resignation rather than enforce Home Rule in Ulster. The government, realising it would have no officers left in the army (two weeks before the Great War kicked off) backtracked and everybody saved face. 1916 2964 Pte William Hogan 7th Bn Leinster Regt Killed in action Western Front Kilrossanty, Co.
