25th October in Irish Military History 1854The Battle of Balaclava was fought during the Crimean War. A famous battle, named after a little port in the Crimea, and giving it’s name to a woolly hat. The most famous part of the battle was a minor engagement involving about 650 British soldiers who were sent to prevent the Russians capturing some allied artillery. Lord Cardigan, the CO, misinterpreted his orders and attacked the wrong guns at the end of a long valley lined with Russian artillery. The skirmish became known as the Charge of the Light Brigade. The participating regiments were the 17th Lancers, 8th Hussars, 11th Hussars, 4th and 13th Light Dragoons. About 150 men died and another 130 were wounded. Over 300 horses died. The officer who carried the fatal message to Cardigan was Irish. The Cherrypickers last Balaclava charger died in Cahir Barracks and was buried under a memorial plaque. A cpy of that plaque is located in the square in Cahir. But the battle also saw two other less famous engagements. The Charge of the Heavy Brigade was one. General Scarlett led the Scots Greys and the Royal Dragoon Guards in an uphill charge against Russian Cavalry and routed them. The same Russian cavalry was later decimated by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, made famous by Kipling as the Thin Red Line, his interpretation of Russell’s description of the thin red streak, tipped with a line of shining steel. 1914 6224 Pte James Keating from Fethard, Co.
