15th November in Irish Military History1649Cromwell's Generals Jones and Ireton decided to attack the Royalist capital at Kilkenny. On November 15th they crossed the Barrow and marched north-west towards Thomastown. The Royalists meanwhile were marching towards New Ross to destroy the Parliamentarian bridgehead. Despite the fact that he had been reinforced with Ulstermen of O’Neill’s army, Ormond was reluctant to engage in open battle, knowing that to do so and lose would effectively mean the loss of Munster to the Parliamentarians. He decided to withdraw back across the River Nore, destroying the bridge behind him. His advance to Kilkenny halted and running short of food, Jones withdrew to New Ross with the main body of troops while sending a large cavalry contingent under Col Reynolds to take the town of Carrick on Suir. 1881Willie Pearse was born in Dublin. 1914During the First Battle of Ypres, the last major German attack of the Germans, by the Prussian Guards, was beaten off. 191610953 Pte Edward Lynch, 1st Bn Irish Guards, From Clonmel, Co. 19th November in Irish Military History 1649Carrick on Suir was taken by Cromwell's troops. Carrick was an important location because sited there was the nearest bridge to the sea over the River Suir, an obstacle protecting the county and the port city of Waterford. Reynolds captured Carrick without the loss of a single man on November 19th. Launching a feint on the main gate, his men entered the town through another gate which had been left unmanned. The Royalists claimed they had been betrayed. Whatever the cause, the Parliamentarians now controlled access to Waterford. Cromwell, recovered from his illness, led the army out of New Ross on November 21st and 2 days later crossed the Suir at Carrick and turned east back along the south bank of the river towards Waterford. He also linked up with Lord Broghill who commanded the troops sent to Cork a month previously. Broghill was actually a Waterford man (from Lismore) and the elder brother of Robert Boyle of Boyle’s Law fame. Broghill hadn’t been taking it easy and had occupied Cork, Kinsale, Youghal and Dungarvan, mainly through defection of Protestant officers. 1798Theobald Wolfe Tone died from a stab wound to his neck which he inflicted upon himself a week earlier. 1913The Irish Citizen Army was formed. 191514300 Pte Michael Morrissey, 8th Bn South Lancashire Regt. Killed in action on the Western Front. He was from Waterford. 1942 Operation Freshman was launched against the Heavy Water Plant at Vermark, Norway, which was vital to the development of an Atomic Bomb by Nazi Germany. Two Horsa gliders towed by Halifax bombers took off from Skitten, four miles north-west of Wick, in Scotland. The gliders were piloted by a two-man crew, three from the army's recently-formed Glider Pilot Regiment and the fourth a pilot from the Royal Australian Air Force. Each glider carried 16 commando-trained volunteers from the 9th Field Coy, Royal Engineers. There was also a medical officer from RAF Skitten. One Halifax and its Horsa glider crashed into a mountainside. There were 10 survivors from this glider. They put up a brief fight before being captured by the Germans who had also captured the other glider's passengers. The second Halifax made it back to Scotland. All the survivors, including two Irishmen, were subsequently executed by the Gestapo. 1872832 L/Cpl Trevor Masters. Age 25. 9th Field Coy, R.E. From Cobh, Co. Cork. 2010213 Dvr Peter Farrell. Age 26. 9th Field Coy, R.E. Born in Ireland. They were two of four prisoners from the failed Operation Freshman who were murdered by the Gestapo in Stavanger, Norway.
